BACKGROUNDER
Neil is 22 years old and is currently finishing his college degree. He also founded and owns a multi-million dollar internet marketing company (ACS).
Working hard isn’t new to Neil, who started his first business in high school. The business was Advice Monkey, which competed against monster.com. Neil spent $5,000 creating the website which he earned by picking up trash and cleaning restrooms at Knotts Berry Farm, selling $1,500 vacuums door to door, working at Hollywood Video, and stocking at
When Neil launched Advice Monkey, he thought that if he made 1% of the revenue monster.com did he would be rich. He soon realized that the website had to be marketed to become popular so he earned more money and paid three different companies over six months to market it. All six companies failed. He got tired of paying other people “who blew smoke” and provided no results, so he decided to learn online marketing himself by reading, and, more importantly, practicing on his own website.
Soon after his techniques started working, Neil took a night class at a community college (a Speech class). In that class he gave a speech on increasing website traffic from search engines. Also in the class was a man from a local company, Elpac Power Supplies. The man asked if Neil could do work for his company. Soon the company was paying Neil $3,000 per month. Neil’s work provided millions of dollars in revenue to the company, and over 51% of the company’s qualified leads.
With this success story, Neil felt very confident and decided to cold call companies and offer to help them bring in more revenue, or he wouldn’t charge them. As clients started signing up, Neil knew he needed help (he was still in high school and it was hard to speak with clients when you are in school until 3 p.m. every day).
So he created ACS with his brother-in-law. Soon companies started paying ACS $3-15,000 per month to help them with internet marketing and the company grew quickly.
