If necessity is the mother of invention, then illness can be the genesis for scientific breakthroughs. Millions of people worldwide suffer from rosacea, an unsightly redness and inflammation of facial skin. One of those is Piotr Chomczynski, Ph.D., a molecular scientist determined to discover a remedy.

Beset with adult-onset rosacea (roh-ZAY-sha), Dr. Chomczynski was determined to find a remedy. Over-the-counter gels didn’t help, and the traditional prescription approach – a regimen of antibiotics – wasn’t a long-term answer. Dr. Chomczynski knew the ancients and other scientists had used menthol and mint leaves to alleviate skin ailments. In 2002, Dr. Chomczynski began experimenting with mint leaves snipped from his own garden. In his personal lab at his biotechnology company, Molecular Research Center Inc., he crafted compounds and tested mixtures on his own skin – until four years later he found just the right blend. Dr. Chomczynski has built his career at the crossroads of bio-science and business. In 1989, he founded Molecular Research Center, and later its Cinna Health Products division, to further the development of Noredol as a consumer brand. During that time, he also launched – and eventually sold – Media Biznes/TV Biznes, a business television station in his native Poland.

Born in 1942, Dr. Chomczynski (“home-chin-ski”) earned his M.A. in biochemistry from the University of Warsaw (1966), his Ph.D., from the Polish Academy of Sciences Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics (1971) and was named a Habilitated Doctor – the highest doctorate degree available – by the Polish Academy of Sciences (1978). A widely cited and published scientific author, Dr. Chomczynski’s paper on his discovery of a breakthrough method of isolating nucleic acid (RNA) is the most cited paper worldwide in the last 20 years, and makes him among The Guardian’s Top 20 Giants of Science.

Dr. Chomczynski lectures frequently to university students in the U.S. and Poland on science, business and entrepreneurship. A married father of three children, Dr. Chomczynski works and lives in Cincinnati, Ohio.
